Ollkorrekt37 Posted March 15, 2022 Share #1 Posted March 15, 2022 Greetings, I'd like to share a helmet I've been very interested in for a while now It's a fully blue/gray M1, one I've seen to be very common with 60s-70s examples. Why I'm interested is the sewn on late-war style of strap on a front seam shell, especially to be reissued so late after. From my understanding, the Navy could have used shells from 1941 up until the mid 90s, and used any paint they had available. Another interesting note about the paint is that there appears to be bits of yellow underneath, as well as the original green. It's painted fully on the inside, which is interesting seeing how mess it is on the outside and on the straps! No liner came with it, so I cannot answer anything about that. Strap is fragile, and appears to be more of an OD#7, though could also be faded from long use. If anyone knows anything about this yellow, I'd appreciate it. Thanks! I believe this code is to confirm as McCord, as there is no S stamp elsewhere.
sigsaye Posted March 15, 2022 Share #2 Posted March 15, 2022 Can’t really tell anything about the yellow from the photos. Again, Navy helmets get repainted repeatedly throughout their life. Yellow enamel was used on some damage control helmets ( usually if there was no red available). It was also used on amphibious ships to designate cargo handlers on station 4. And, sometimes they just got random paint spilled on them. There’s really no science to it. Mostly bored Seamen doing busy work because they got caught goofing off or sleeping when they were supposed to be working.
