New to me….

I’ve never seen tags without a service number…plus never seen tags with a rank.

He might have had these made up to use as a name tag for his equipment, etc.

I have seen many official USMC & USN Tags to Officers with rank and w/o service number - they are out there but not that common

It did happen, although it was not very common. Almost all of the ones I have seen (and most of the ones documented on the forum) belonged to members of the First Marine Division. Not all though. According to the muster roles, your man might be Edgar S Carlson who served with the First Armored Amphibian Battalion from October 1943 to war’s end. But this unit was not part of the First Marine Division. Your tags are also stamped a little differently than the WWII USMC tags on army stock I have seen, so hard to tell exactly what to conclude here.

May have been made in an Army Hospital or perhaps aboard a troop transport ship.
