S&W revolver ID to D S Yohn First defender

Recommended Posts

Hi all, here is an interesting litlle revolver from my collection.
This egraved Smith and Wesson Number 1 revolver rates near fine for overall condition, with about 40 percent original finish overall, with the barrel assembly showing only shifting to gray with sharp barrel markings,  90 percent or better silver on the frame and backstrap, excellent grips, and a really nice engraved script identification on the backstrap and the butt. The serial number is 21430 and the pistol falls into the standard second model.
The inscription on the backstrap is professionally done in script and reads:
Presented to D S Yohn 1861 on the backstrap and on the butt By his bro W Y
D.S. Yohn was born in Berks County Pennsylvania USA in January 17, 1844,
As son of William Yohn and Phillipina (Levan) Yohn
Brother of William Yohn (mid) 1822 and Isabella Yohn, Amelia Yohn, Isaac Yohn, John Yohn, Emma
Yohn, and Charles Yohn.
Died Apr 9, 1919, Hampton city Virginia, buried in Reading Berks County Pennsylvania.
The revolver was a gift from his brother William Yohn and has the date 1861 engraved, this is it
beginning of the American Civil War and probably intended and given as a backup weapon after
the conscription of Daniel in the 25th regiment on April 18, 1861.
Searching for D.S. Yohn on the National Park Service Soldiers Details, I found that Daniel had enlisted in the 25th regiment Pennsylvania infantry company A (3 months, 1861)
Better known as the "First defenders"
On April 15, 1861, President Lincoln issued a call to arms, ordering out the militia of a number of states which amounted to 75,000 men. The state of Pennsylvania was requested to send sixteen regiments, two of which would be required for duty within three days. This call for arms was due to the threat of an immediate attack on Washington, as the capital was entirely unprotected and open to attack.

Among the first units to respond to the President’s call for arms to defend the capital were the Ringgold Light Artillery, the Logan Guards, the Washington Artillery, the National Light Infantry and the Allen Rifles. All of these units had been forewarned of the impending crises and were prepared. The Ringgold Light Artillery is credited with being the first unit to respond to the call for defense. It should be noted at this point that it was these volunteer state militias whom Lincoln called on at the beginning of the war to defend the country until a draft could be enacted to raise a war time army.

Daniel was a member of Company A is also known as the Ringgold Light Artillery of Reading.
Their activities during these 3 months (April 18, 1861 to August 1, 1861) were in first to defend the Capitol and the navy yard in Washington DC, later he reinlisted and survived the Civil War,
Daniel S Yohn his name appears in the book:
The First Defenders: 5 Companies of Penna Volunteers written by Heber S Thompson published in 1910.
