30th Division helmet

A couple weeks back I had an adverse interaction with a patch of ice and gravity and tore my left quadriceps; had surgery Thursday morning so I'm in a full leg cast for 4 to 8 weeks. Ergo I have to work from home and can't go to the museum for a while, which has been a real downer. My wife brought me a little pick me up Friday though. A gent stopped in week before last and said he had about 20 WWI helmets and he'd try to stop back by. His names is James Turinetti, who co-wrote a field guide to Imperial German Headgear. He included a signed copy of his book; the helmet is in fantastic shape and the chin strap is still very pliable. When I was taking the photos, one side revealed "USA" scratched in the finish. Also note that the heat stamp is so deeply stamped it can be read from the outside brim.

... and so it goes...

Marchville1918

some of these helmets have the light blue color in the insignia and others use a dark blue. Does anyone know why the difference? Nice helmet btw.

It's neat that the insignia was left rough and the the texture was scraped off on the rest of the helmet.  Usually it's the other way around.

I've heard that the components of the division from North Carolina used blue for the insignia, but that's always struck me as a collector legend.
