standard M1 helmet being worn back to front, possibly . . . . . . . . . . as witnessed in several other images during WWII, one such image being in the original footage of Memphis Belle film.

I’m with Lewis, that’s an M1 helmet but must admit that at first glance it looked Russian, I had to take a closer look.

 

Its the lighting and shadow that distorts it’s appearance.

Thank you Peter and Lewis. I appreciate it. Something about the helmet just looks "off" to me and agree that it looks Russian/Eastern Block at first glance. 

 

The reason I posted this in the Portrait section is because it came with this portrait. This is the guy on the left. Studio portraits of US service men with dogs are rarely seen. Probably not a working dog but a nice photo just the same.

my guess is that the chin strap is fastened across the back of the helmet and that combined with the fuzzy picture make the helmet look odd. they don't look like they are clowning around so I'm not going with the helmet backward
