Got this neat Iraqi helmet with modified liner the other day, was told this was a 101st Airborne vet bring back found in Mosul in 2003, the veteran saw a bunch of abandoned gear and equipment by a group of destroyed tanks and gathered up a number of helmets to keep and give out, this was one of them that was recovered.

I was in Iraq with the Australian Army in ‘04-‘05, that is an awesome bring back. I found a lot of abandoned gear in my travels over there, couldn’t ship or bring all of it back however 😆 even found a pre WW2 Vickie light tank in Taji.

Cheers

MOSUL, IRAQ - FEBRUARY 4: Iraqi men march during a parade in Mosul north of Baghdad , February 4, 2003. Thousands of armed volunteers paraded in northern Iraq in defiance of U.S. threats to invade Iraq to oust President Saddam Hussein. Chanting "No Peace, No Surrender" waves of men and women in military fatigues and carrying assault rifles took part in a parade for the government-sponsored Jerusalem Army militia in Mosul. In the first photo - isn't that Frank from "American Pickers?"  I brought back a number of those helmets from the first Gulf War but mine all had webbing in the liner vs the perforated leather....

Great image of the Iraqi DPM airborne or para smock in use. (2nd Image). Very cool. Might have to break down and buy one.

So that's why he hasn't been on the show in awhile!  Isn't that Stan Lee in the second photo saluting?

This may be a better question for the WMF, but is that an earlier or later model Iraqi helmet with the leather liner? The one that I have brought back by a DS vet has the webbing.

The leather liner is taken from a Polish wz. 50, which was Iraq's primary helmet before it was replaced in the early 1980s with what collectors call the "M80" which is what the body of this helmet is, and like you say it had a webbing liner.

Presumably they had either a bunch of old wz 50s, or possibly a bunch of replacement liners for the wz. 50, and a bunch of "M80"s with damaged or missing suspensions, and someone cobbled them together.

To the best of my knowledge this was done sometime after Operation Desert Storm, but it has been a while since I've actively collected Iraqi gear so I might be wrong.

Cap Camouflage Pattern I, thank you vey much for the clarification! For collectors, I think the opposing forces of Desert Storm, OIF and OEF are going to provide as diverse a collecting field as WWII German or Japanese.

That is a great helmet and one not often seen as a bring back. Here is an article I did several years ago that contains the one I brought home. Just scroll down in the topic and you will find my helmet and beret articles.    Scott
