I found this pic on another post here on the forum (I hope original poster doesn't mind I borrowed it).  I noticed the round item on the butt of the Thompson.  What is it?  Looks like a compass?

Taylor and Superior both made the Engineer wrist compass. They are often called " Airborne" but can find them used by many who were able to get them.

Probably not a good location for one's compass.   There is a lot of steel in that Thompson so I would be concerned about it affecting the accuracy of the magnetic compass.

Neat pic.

Funny how history repeats itself… I’ve seen plenty of guys attach their Garmin (wrist GPS’s) to their butt stock.
