I’ve read in the reference section where mess kits were made from aluminum for a short time, but the handles were stamped steel

this kit is all aluminum, even the handle

no makers mark, no US

Any thoughts or insight?

Did some looking but could not locate the post mentioned by the O.P. However, he stated some mess kits were made of aluminum with a steel handle. This is apparently what I recently picked up. Both pan and divided lid are aluminum. The handle is like the earlier, WW1 vintage ones. However, I noted the handle base is secured by only two rivets. At the "hooked" end, it is stamped "A.C.U. Co" | 1941. Kit looks used but not abused. I passed it by the week before while at the swapmeet. Having more time to examine it the next weekend, decided it looked OK and included it with a few other items I purchased. Can't say I ever saw a mess kit dated 1941, which is what initially piqued my interest...

The army tested an all aluminum mess kit in 1905 but found that the handle was too weak. Here is my R.I.A. 1905 kit.
