Unusual Patch Placement -- Have you ever seen this?

In these photos, taken circa 1943 in Italy, you clearly see a soldier of the 45th Infantry Division wearing his division insignia on the back of his field jacket, as opposed to the upper left sleeve as is required. Has anyone ever seen anything like this on a collected piece or seen it done in the Army? It struck me as unusual.

I tried to load them as jpeg but they're taken from an iphone camera, and I guess that's the only supported format.

Shows a man sitting near a group of soldiers, back to camera with his 45ID patch on the back of his M1941 field jacket.

Is the 45th patch standard size or is it larger?

If standard, then it is unusual. If painted on, as AB Hunter says, probably larger. Done often enough.

jpeg works fine, maybe too large an image

Doesn’t look like a patch to me, maybe stenciled on ?

I agree w/ Wake1941, now that pix are avail. Just a GI being different.

The patch looks more drawn to me than sewn on. I have seen artwork drawn on the back of jackets before.

agree. looks drawn or stenciled.

Is it to reduce friendly fire from rear units/troops? I have never seen this anywhere else before nor of it being done.
