elh1311 Posted December 25, 2021 Share #1 Posted December 25, 2021 And a Merry Christmas! A nice, FS/SB M1-C with OD7 chinstraps with a post-war CAPAC paratrooper liner. Repainted several times with evidence that the tac mark is at least the second or third iteration for this helmet. There's a name and service number written on the inside of the lid, different from the one written on the liner. The top and helmet came from the same veteran who served in the 511th during the Korean War (no evidence yet that he actually went to Korea as the 511th was stateside during the war) though I'm still going through his research. The name on the top and on the helmet liner are a match. Really happy with this one, been trying to chase down a painted airborne lid for ages. BEAR Posted December 26, 2021 Share #5 Posted December 26, 2021 Thank you. This answers a question I have had for a while. Sometime in the 50s the Army rerouted the Airborne chinstrap so that the short snap piece hung to the outside and then routed through the swivel bail and snapped to the liner. This happened with the addition of the metal chin strap clips so that the clip did not pull into the jumpers face and gouge him. But the earliest pictures I have found showing that routing is 1955. Since your chinstrap is sewn on then I can assume this happened earlier than 1955, although it was not necessary for a sewn on chinstrap. From the look of the sewing I feel it may have been a rigger adaption. BEAR

The stitching does not appear to be factory. Conceivably, this helmet started out as a standard M1 lid and the unit riggers attached the M1C straps to it at a later date. FT.Monmouth1943 Posted December 27, 2021 Share #10 Posted December 27, 2021 It’s for The Massachusetts Military Academy. I would advise in the future to simply start your own topic about the liner instead of spamming all of these unrelated helmet threads. - Jakob
