Equipment on USMC Guadalcanal display?

Hi,

I want to go in some detail in my early WW2 USMC display.

Which equipment/web gear was possible on Guadalcanal when the USMC fought there?

Would be an M1918 cartridges belt and M1910 entrenching tool + cover (dated 1918 and "US" stamped) plausible?

I also bought an blancoed M1910 cartridges belt for this display.

Thanks and best regards,

Lukas

Hey! The blancoed cartridge belt is great. I haven’t seen too many high quality pictures of marines shovels and covers while on the canal but the majority seem to be depot made covers. Although I believe a ww1 cover would be 100% plausible since they did use a lot of surplus from ww1.

As far as first aid pouches go, the only ones I’ve seen in use are either the depot made pouches or the m1924 ones. I haven’t seen any marine carrying the m1910 pattern on the canal.

If you would like to know any more let me know!

1. M1941 Haversack with Early Buckles, 2. M1 Fixed bail with Hawley liner, 3. P41 HBT Uniform, 4. Either BAR, Rifle, or Pistol Belt, 5. M1941 Suspenders, (All of this is from 1941-1943 production)

Thank you very much for the answers!

It is very helpful for me that I also can use a M1942 first aid pouch. These are much easier to find.

JerryTheGerman:

By now I think I have or will get everything you mentioned.

M1941 Haversack with early buckles (unfortunately no D-Ring) and a very nice M1 with hawley liner will arrive soon.

Also two blancoed/darkened M1910 rifle belts (I just managed to get another one) will arrive in the near future.

I already have a nice P41 HBT tunic in my collection with brass buttons but 1944 dated.

Hard to find a 1942 dated one but it's ok for me.

Also I have a pair of M1941 suspenders but not with the flat type buckles.

Would this type also fit?

Thanks,

Lukas

Flat buckles were there from the start to the middle of the battle and Might have been used in the end but it’s still unlikely. If you’re putting up a display probably no one will notice but if you are looking for one, look on eBay as many sellers can’t tell the difference.

  • 4 weeks later...

Thanks!

Yes, surprisingly I also could get a fitting lower pack for the early P41 haversack yesterday!

There's the equipment for my dispay so far:

could also use an M1917A1 transition helmet, the 8th Marines had them coming from Samoa.  There are photos of them being worn.  When my grandfather's unit relieved the 8th Marines off the line, he said they were wearing them.

Hello Lukas,

grest thread mare, My collection is also very focused on this campaign,  I’m enjoying watching your display come together.

I have found the following links very useful, particularly for equipment reference, and just great to watch. Nothing beats ‘moving pictures’

Cheers

Hi Sean and USMC_Collector!

Sean, thanks for the videos! It helps a lot. There are much "khaki uniforms" to see and I think I will put together at least a shirt and pants with M1 helmet.

Thank you very much! But don't expect too much.

Next week the trousers hopefully will arrive and then I will send some pictures from the mannequin so far.

A blanco'd M1910 first aid pack is also on it's way.

I am not 100% happy with this display because I need some more matching items like a tan USMC shelter half and a M1905 bayonet with canvas scabbard.

For now I only have a bayonet with the "plastic" scabbard.

Also I only have a standard US Army E-tool but I think this wouldn't be wrong.

Best regards,

Lukas

Hi!

Here are some shots of the US Marine and US Army Guadalcanal display.

Uniform and equipment of the US Marine:

US M1 helmet with hawley liner

P41 shirt (I took one in worn condition, originally from a guy who served as an aircraft mechanic on the USS Essex in the pacifc. It's fitting better with the 1942 trousers.)

P41 trousers 1942

P41 upper pack (early)

P41 lower pack (early)

M1910 blanco'd cartridges belt

2nd pattern USMC canteen + other most likely USMC canteen

standard supsenders

Repro boondockers

US Army soldier (inspired by "The Thin Red Line"):

1st pattern HBT shirt

1st pattern HBT trousers

M1923 cartridges belt 1943 (will be replaced)

US Army canteen 1942

M1928 Haversack 1942

E-Tool 1942

no shoes, naked feet hidden beneath a shelter quarter ;-)

Best regards,

Lukas

Now this is an amazing. I’m doing a late 43’ early 44’ Corpsman set-up. And it takes quite a lot to make something like this. And as always the pay off is amazing.

Thank you very much!

I also have seen some of your amazing Corpsman equipment!

For me here in Europe it's almost impossible to find USMC equipment so most of these items were imported from the US.

Here are some older pics of my 1943 USMC diplay with the P42 uniform.

Best regards,

Lukas

Looks great Lukas, nothing better than a well researched representation. I saw you were chasing an early bottom pack and I’m sorry that I couldn’t help you at the time.

Cheers

Hi!

This week I got the M1910 pouch.

With IR light I slightly can see a "1942" stamp.

It was also blanco´d and it's fitting the cartridges belt.

This is the last update to the Guadalcanal display.

I am happy with it so far. 🙂

Also there are some pics with camo shelter half for a Marine in the later Guadalcanal campaign!

Best regards,

Lukas
