As I recall, there were only 1000 Model 1899's manufactured for the Army.  I put in a bid on the last one made, serial number 14000, about 5 years ago, which was in beautiful, original condition, and I wish I had bid higher.  

 

Your pistol was inspected by (then) Captain John Taliaferro Thompson, namesake of the Thompson Submachine Gun, and later Brigadier General.
