CavalryCombatant Posted December 11, 2021 Share #1 Posted December 11, 2021 Howdy folks! Been a while since I’ve posted here but got this one in a few days ago and figured I’d share it! The helmet shell is a late war FS/SB M1C with sewn OD7 chinstraps and a mang rim. Liner is a late war westy with wire buckles, was pretty nervous about them not being cast but upon further research Westinghouse did, in fact, use wire buckles during the tail end of the war. All this is joined together underneath a 1965 Mitchell cover and a helmet band free of cat eyes. If anyone has an idea when exactly the band was made, I’d be very interested to learn! It seems a bit new to the cover but definitely has had a band on it for most of its life. All the rust marks match on the helmet shell & the cover, so I don’t doubt they’ve been together since it’s time in service. The chinstraps have the traditional wear you see when they’ve been wrapped around the back of the helmet for decades. The liner also has some awesome wear to it, I love the old tape holding the sweatband tighter and the added tape to the nape to make it more comfortable (?) Best part? When I pulled the liner theres evidence that a LT’s bar sat there for a long time, so it’s not just an awesome helmet- it’s an awesome officers helmet! There does appear to be the remnants of a name in the liner, but far too faded to read. I do plan to try and use a UV camera at some point, but currently not on the menu. By chance if anyone can help me determine the vintage of the liner chincup it’d be appreciated. Without further ado, here are the photos! Hope you guys like it as much as I do! manayunkman Posted December 11, 2021 Share #4 Posted December 11, 2021 I have a similar shell and liner that is identified to an 11th AB trooper from the 1950s. Though many components were made during WWII your cover is made after. I’m not familiar with all the specifics of these covers so I don’t know when they were first used but I would date this helmet to that time and or after since it’s all been together for so long. I hope that makes sense.
CavalryCombatant Posted December 11, 2021 Author Share #5 Posted December 11, 2021 Thanks for the positive words, guys! I really appreciate it. Took nearly three weeks in shipping but I was pretty excited when it arrived! 33 minutes ago, manayunkman said: I have a similar shell and liner that is identified to an 11th AB trooper from the 1950s.
