zk4298militaria Posted December 2, 2021 Share #1 Posted December 2, 2021 These souvenirs were brought back from France and Germany by my great grandfather Leo Groeschen Sr (Last picture). This collection includes a Prussian Dragoon Picklehaube, a German flare gun, a Coblenz Germany 3rd army souvenir banner, and the piece of shrapnel that nearly hit him. There is more of his stuff in the family (insignia, papers, hat) but I have not had access to it yet. Want more pictures or info let me know. Ivydiv Posted December 2, 2021 Share #6 Posted December 2, 2021 They would certainly be the centerpiece of my collection if it were my family. You are one lucky guy to find them all intact. Some great stuff for sure. Dave

zk4298militaria Posted May 20, 2022 Author Share #11 Posted May 20, 2022 I finally got some of his information with help from a friend. He was a Sergeant in F company Third Ammunition Train. One notable thing is that he sailed aboard the RMS Carpathia on March 18th 1918 from New York bound for Liverpool.

zk4298militaria Posted November 6, 2022 Author Share #15 Posted November 6, 2022 It finally happened! Items I did not believe existed have been found. His 5 bar Victory Medal, Mexican Service Medal, dog tag, and collar disks. His discharge papers, two promotion papers, and typed history of the 3rd ammunition train. Based on the paperwork he enlisted Dec 1915 and served at the tail end of the Mexican Expedition with the 17th Infantry Reg, then with the 55th Infantry. Of 10,000 servicemen that went on the expedition, his medal is number 9103. He the joined the Third Ammunition Train and served in France. The company history does a very detailed job of their service. I am ecstatic that these items were found, and I am now aware of more that I have to wait for, a sword as I’ve been told. These will surely be documented and properly displayed with his war souvenirs.
kfields Posted November 6, 2022 Share #16 Posted November 6, 2022 Great collection of family items! Maybe check the 'Preservation Forum' here and read up on how to remedy the green tarnish attacking the medals. Go slow with that so you don't rub away the 'good' patina. sundance Posted November 6, 2022 Share #19 Posted November 6, 2022 It's easy to see the well-deserved pride you have in your great grandfather. What a great group. Your idea of a family display is a must. Even if you can't get your hands on things held by your relatives it would be nice if they gave you access to them or documented them for you to include in your history/display. I'd be hard pressed to give up a sword myself. Do you know how long he lived? Getting an obit always caps things off.
jerseygary Posted November 6, 2022 Share #20 Posted November 6, 2022 This is really neat to see. I live in Fort Thomas, about a mile and a half from the address on his draft card. You're lucky to have this group

GAZOO Posted February 3, 2023 Share #23 Posted February 3, 2023 Beautiful You are VERY VERY LUCKY as others have said its GREAT your family has saved these TREASURES. This would absolutely be the CENTER of attention in my world if it were one of my Family HEROs BTW I recently learned a lesson on picking up these WWI (and older) Medals NEVER lift by the ribbon, the weight may cause the ribbon to separate, I learned a valuable lesson recently to ONLY PICK UP BY THE MEDAL not the ribbon I suspect the Victory Medal had this happen :( but that is very minor issue that can be corrected if/when mounted or displayed I would be very proud
