UShistorybuff00 Posted November 28, 2021 Share #1 Posted November 28, 2021 Hello everyone! Picked up this button today. It says it’s from the civil war(US Army) general service. Can anyone confirm that for me? Thanks.
dag Posted November 28, 2021 Share #2 Posted November 28, 2021 Per Tice's book on backmarks: "Found on common army, general-service buttons produced during the Civil War. It was used from the late 1850's until 1865."

Duggap Posted March 11, 2022 Share #6 Posted March 11, 2022 Albert's book shows the general service button to have been in use until 1875, than the eagle button in use had it's wings pointing more at a 90 degree angle. That button was used until 1902 when the great seal button came in. The backmark on your button, being in bold letters, is a post civil war backmark per McGuinn and Bazelon backmark book. Bob B Posted August 9, 2022 Share #7 Posted August 9, 2022 My review of both Tice's book and McGuinn & Bazelon's book show this dmdc (depressed mark in depressed channel) backmark with 2 stars to be Civil War era. Tice says late 1850's-1865, M&B say 1861-1865.
