tarbridge Posted November 16, 2021 Share #1 Posted November 16, 2021 I purchased this 1907 Richmond UCV Reunion medal because of a family connection regarding Eli Brafford...my Great Grandfather. The rear of the medal is stamped J.D.Dorsett...Siler City, North Carolina. Dorsett and Eli are both from Chatham County, the location of Siler City. The three Brafford brothers listed on the roster were Eli's brothers. Many of the Brafford men served in the 2nd NC Heavy Artillery...30th NC Infantry Regiment and in this case of Dorsett and the Braffords...Co.E 26th North Carolina Infantry Regiment. So, the geographical location... the familial connection and the unique circumstances of the acknowledgement of James Daniel Dorsett as the last surviving member of the 26th North Carolina, perked my interest. The Dorsett and Brafford families would have known each other being from the same small area to serving in the same unit. James Dorsett suffered a chest and shoulder wound and was captured at The Battle of Gettysburg.
BigJohn#3RD Posted December 5, 2021 Share #2 Posted December 5, 2021 Robert, Very cool addition to your North Carolina Veterans. Having been so seriously wounded as well as being captured, it is truly amazing that James Dorsett outlived the others in his unit. Thank for sharing this unique medal, picture and history of this soldier. Best regards, John
