Planes on a cruiser?

I picked up this old snapshot from a flea market this summer. Just curious as to the type of aircraft and maybe an ID of the ship they are on.

I suspect the scene dates to the 30's.

Included is an image of what is written on back.

Thanks!

Kim

Kim,

Look up and read about the Vought FU.

the Wiki for the Vought FU has this to say...

With their float gear mounted, one was assigned to each of the battleships of the Pacific Fleet, where these observation seaplanes were launched from catapults.

They were also on cruisers, USS Indianapolis had them and one catapult was eventually removed to accommodate the Atomic Bomb delivery just prior to her sinking.   Scott
