BILL THE PATCH Posted November 2, 2021 #76 Posted November 2, 2021 Here's my one and only ww1 Fulton county NY medal in original box. Came with the service number on pink slip of paper and is the father of an AAF aerial gunner. I have his group and this was in it. Can anyone tell me by the service number what outfit he was in ? His last name should be Miller.
mikes militaria Posted November 2, 2021 #77 Posted November 2, 2021 Everforward, I have definitely opened a can of worms with this interest. I started with VA medals and have really gotten carried away. I have more states to post. I’m narrowing it down to the more rare medals. There are a couple states that issued minimal local medals. It’s an ongoing learning process. There are two VA medals I would like to find, that I know of, Goochland County issued 365. It’s not unreasonable to possibly find one. The other listed in Small’s book is Fleetwood. I googled Fleetwood and found two different farms. There is no info in Small’s book about the Fleetwood medal except that one existed. There is another book by Boyce ,that I don’t have, that may have more info on VA medals. Mike
mikes militaria Posted November 3, 2021 #78 Posted November 3, 2021 Hey Bill the Patch, I haven’t researched anyone, but I might suggest the Unit and Individual research forum. You may get more attention to your question or someone that could give you more information on finding what you’re looking for.

Sometimes I'm just not in the mood to start thread

I use Richard Planck's book as my guide because I think it is the most comprehensive and then work in Louis Small's book to fill in the gaps. I think I have a near complete collection of the Virginia medals as shown in the picture below. Based on Planck's book I'm missing only the Virginia Sons of the American Revolution medal. There are also a couple I would like another example of so I can display them front and back which I like to do in my displays. I also include the organization medals including the service medal for the Richmond Howitzers which served in WW1 as Battery A, 111th FA, 29th Division. For good measure I have included 2 examples of the 29th Division WW1 medal which is not technically a Virginia medal per se since the division included National Guard units from Maryland, New Jersery, Delaware, and DC as well as Virginia. I, too, have seen references to several other Virginia medals including Fleetwood, but have not seen any corroborating evidence of their existence. I would certainly like to see any others that Forum members may have in their collection. If the labels in the picture are not legible please speak up and I'll post a list. Dennis

mikes militaria Posted November 3, 2021 #83 Posted November 3, 2021 Hi Dennis, Thank you for posting your VA medals. I had no idea a York Co medal existed, and your Goochland Co medal. Gives me hope that maybe I’ll find one. There are two medals under the Richmond medals. If I had to guess I’d say they are the reverse of the Richmond medals but I can’t tell. Again, thank you for your pictures and information, Mike

What I have labeled "York County" is frequently, in my opinion, misidentified as "Messick, VA". The medal was presented by the "Women's Service League of Messick" but from my research, was presented to York County veterans. This was not an unusual occurance. For example, there was recently an interesting post on the Forum about the Bethlehem, PA medal. That medal was presented to all Bethlehem, PA vererans by the "Go Eddie Tobacco Fund". A number of private and public organizations did this, usually soliciting funds for the medals then awarding them on behalf of the town, county, etc. Messick is not actually a town in VA but is probably more accurately identified as a "populated place". You can find some interesting information online on its status and history under Poquoson, VA. There are a lot of dots to connect. I have 5 Richmond medals in the case. They are the 5 to the left of the Goochland County, and Frederick County and Winchester medals. Three of the 5 are named including the one with the suspension rings cut off. In my experience, putting together "complete" state collections of these medals takes persistence, impeccable timing, and a heck of a lot of luck. DD

Some county and town medals were intended to be used as watch fobs and were not presented with a ribbon. Perhaps someone else on the Forum knows the answer. Previously unknown county and town medals still show occaisionally. Perhaps more will come out of the woodwork for Louisiana. Dennis
bertmedals Posted November 5, 2021 #97 Posted November 5, 2021 I should also have mentioned that the obverse of the Ninth Ward New Orleans medal depicts the Victory Arch in the Ninth Ward which is considered to be the first permanent memorial to Americans who served in WW1. It still stands in Macarty Square in New Orleans.
bertmedals Posted November 5, 2021 #98 Posted November 5, 2021 One more thing... (LOL), Newport News, VA did the same thing, dipicting their Victory Arch on their medal. That arch still stands, too. Pictures of the Newport News medal and the arch are below.
Hermanus Posted November 5, 2021 #99 Posted November 5, 2021 Apart from the extensive array of beautifull medals, this topic is full of new information. Thanks for the education. 😊 Regards Herman
