Ricky Marchi Posted October 23, 2021 Share #1 Posted October 23, 2021 Hi everyone! Want to show you this og 107 dated 1972. This was the first us military shirt I have bought in my life! I would like to ask what you think. as you can see the first av. Brigade patch was on the right sleeve and it has been stitched again on the left one. It looks original as the name and the us army tab But the remaining patches( rank on collar, badges and the other collar patch) as pictures show you, looks like added later maybe recently. They don’t have in the back of the stitching the classic “waves” old patches have. the stitching is different too, the sewing thread for the av. Brigade patch is brown for all the other ones is black . Is it normal ? I would like to ask if someone of you can identify the collar patch on the right . I was not able to find out anything( I think is some branch of service ) . And last , the badge. In all my life that was the only one aircraft crewman badge I saw for an og-107. Was it normal to wear it back in VN. War? thank you guys
Tonomachi Posted October 24, 2021 Share #2 Posted October 24, 2021 The collar insignia is Intelligence Branch and this uniform is actually dated 1973 not 1972. I checked the Internet and the 1st Aviation Brigade was deactivated in 1973 but reactivated in 1977. This could explain why the pentagonal shaped patch on the left arm was replaced with the 1st Aviation Brigade patch. So this major could have been with the 1st Aviation Brigade at the end of the Vietnam War which is why the 1st Aviation Brigade patch was on the right arm and once the brigade was reactivated he rejoined the brigade and moved the patch over to the left arm as this was now his current unit assignment. Of course why he didn't leave the 1st Aviation Brigade patch on the right arm and gotten another for the left arm is a little puzzling.
patches Posted October 24, 2021 Share #3 Posted October 24, 2021 I suspect, that the 1st Avn Bde patch was removed from the combat side and sewn on the other side, note how there are thread on it, mostly off the border the tread sewn down down the patch then the tan thread on the border, the tread sewn down the patch when it was on the other side, plus the tread on the patch does not match up with the thread on the rest of the insignia. The patch that used to be there was V Corps,

This is from the Army Officers Registry, they are viewable from the War of 1812 till 1969, after 1969 the Armed Forces switches to Social Security Numbers, and here in America as well as this site U.S. Militaria Forum do not post Social Security Numbers. The Registries are very very helpful, but they as you see do not list units they were in, some of the older, the previous years list awards I think. The only real way to see his service, is to have his Jacket, that is his file, don't know how to go about that sorry to say.
