Tracing Indian Wars Medal

A friend has asked me for help researching a medal grouping he has come across that includes a numbered Indian Wars medal and I do not know where to access the rolls for this medal. The medal seems a little out of place with the career of the man all the other medals trace to, so I’m wondering if it could have been a family member.

The medal is marked No. 653.

Do the other two campaign medal have numbers on them and if so, what are the numbers.

Honestly I am not sure about the Spanish-American War medal, the Philippine Insurrection Medal is 713 and comes back to Capt John William Barker, 3d Inf. Later Brigadier General with the 165th Infantry Regiment in WWI.

My buddy said all 3 are numbered so I will have to ask about the Spanish-American.

Missed the time to edit my last post it wanted to add this.

I do not believe the Indian Campaign medal goes with the other medals because Barker only graduated from West Point in 1894, 3 years after the end of eligibility for the Indian Wars Medal.

I did not look to see if Barker was there...or with the unit then...or got an Indian Wars Medal, but the 3rd Infantry fought at the Battle of Leech Lake in Minnesota in October of 1898.

Hmm, that could explain it… he definitely was there.

Thank you both of you! Until Unclegrumpy added that info I thought there was no way this one belonged. I appreciate everyone’s help!

Spanish Campaign Medal No 449 was awarded to John W Barker

Philippine Campaign Medal No 713 was issued to John W Barker

In the photo the Spanish and Philippine campaign medals have the Silver Citation Star affixed to the drapes.

General Order 13, 1924, section V, Philippine:   cited then 1st LT John W Barker, 3rd Infantry, for gallantry against insurgent forces at Mount Lumandan Pampanga, P.I. on January 17, 1900

General Order 13, 1924 section IX, Spanish: cited then 1st LT John W Barker, 3rd Infantry, for gallantry against Spanish forces at Santiago, Cuba on July 1, 1898

Excellent group and thanks for posting it.  The Indian Wars Medal is very interesting,  The Battle of Leech Lake, also called the Battle of Sugar Point and the Chippewa Indian Outbreak is considered the last battle of the Indian Wars. Approximately 80 men from the 3rd Infantry Regiment took part in the battle apparently becoming the last soldiers to qualify for the Indian Wars Medal.

John Barker's bio with the West Point Association of Graduates also indicates he was wounded in the Philippine Insurrection.

Private Oskar Burkard received the Medal of Honor for his actions in the Battle of Sugar Point becoming the last soldier to earn the Medal of Honor in the Indian Wars.  Pvt Burkard was commissioned during WW1 and retired as a Major, Medical Corps.

Thanks guys, I’ve really learned quite a bit thanks to y’all! My buddy did get a fuzzy pic of the SpanAm, and you can’t really tell, but it is No. 449 so everything does check out to this awesome soldier. Also found a great portrait of him when he was a Brigadier General so I will add that as well.
