warguy Posted October 20, 2021 Share #2 Posted October 20, 2021 1917 Army winter cap. The Marines had an identical one in forest green wool. The Marine ones are hard to find, but the Army ones seem common and for some reason don't fetch a lot of interest. Best, Kevin
US Victory Museum Posted October 20, 2021 Share #3 Posted October 20, 2021 This article is called Cap, Winter. It conforms to specification 1047, which was standardized on Oct. 12th 1909. Your cap, although undated, has a Great War contract number on the tag which puts it in the c. 1917-1918 date range. Some early ones (c. 1909) were lined on the inside with surplus blue wool that the Army still had on hand after having changed over to olive drab. The blue lined ones are highly collectable, as are any with early dates. Fellow forum member TrenchRat has an excellent display showing this cap as part of a winter diorama. I have re-posted this photo from his collection. M-
Dragoon Posted October 20, 2021 Share #4 Posted October 20, 2021 Mike has covered the subject very well I have nothing more to add. Except just for reference a few pics of my 1913 dated example.
Ray42 Posted October 20, 2021 Share #5 Posted October 20, 2021 I always thought the early ones were really cool. Here is one I found, it is in great shape but doesn’t appear to have ever had a date applied to the tag.
Dragoon Posted October 20, 2021 Share #6 Posted October 20, 2021 I would add the construction of the earlier caps differ slightly, the later versions have a seam around the crown, whereas the earlier versions are made up of just two sides stitched in the center. Ray42, nice cap!
