Manchu Warrior Posted October 16, 2021 Share #1 Posted October 16, 2021 I recently picked this group up from a relative of the soldier that served with Advisory TEAM 98 in 69-70. The only items that she kept were his dog tags ad one photo of him and she informed me that she was swindled out of his Purple Heart many years ago. With that said I have a couple of questions. To start with I would like to ID the pocket hanger. I can find nothing that would indicate that it is a TEAM 98 pocket hanger but I didn't do much research. I would also like to know what is an A.R.M. Section? It is engraved on the back of one of the Zippo lighters. My last questions have to do with the photos. I am no expert but the photos look like they were taken much earlier then 1969. The young lady said that there was no doubt that that was him in the photos. With that said the soldier was also a combat veteran of the Korean War and the other soldiers name is also written on the back and his last name is Pak. Were the photos possibly taken in the ROK and not Vietnam? I would also like someone to ID the weapon he has and the ammo pouches. My favorite item is the MACV Advisory TEAM 98 Zippo that is still brand new in he box. Which is surprising because in his medical records it states that he was a heavy smoker. It has never been lit and it really is absolutely beautiful my picture just stinks. Any help is appreciated!
mvmhm Posted October 16, 2021 Share #2 Posted October 16, 2021 The weapon is a Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR), which was first issued at the end of WWI...with the associated web belt/ammo pouches. Mark sends
gwb123 Posted October 16, 2021 Share #3 Posted October 16, 2021 I would say that the photos were taken in Korea rather than Vietnam.
gwb123 Posted October 16, 2021 Share #4 Posted October 16, 2021 I believe the pocket hanger that you have is generic for MACV Advisory groups. It incorporates the insignia of MACV, the Vietnamese Popular Forces and Regional Forces (armor and crossed sword and cannon). There apparently was a pocket patch for Advisory Team 96, but it may not have been in use at the time this individual was with the team. This is a reproduction that is currently for sale on eBay. dg12345 Posted January 9 Share #8 Posted January 9 I served in USA in MACV in VN 1970-71, and got a plastic covered patch like the one you show. I believe I got it at Di An Advisory School. I was CO (O2) of MAT III-26 in Long An Provence. On the badge Upper left is RF regional forces and upper right is Popular forces. MAT = Mobile Advisory Team. Bayonet usually means Infantry. I served with the RF's, PF's and PSDF's.
