M1902 Infantry Dress Uniform With Cavalry Stripe and Crossed Sabers

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I just purchased this and I’m pretty excited to have it. I have two other infantry 1902 uniforms but this is my first with the cavalry stripe on the cuff. Interestingly it has crossed sabers into the chest which I’ve never seen before.
Has anyone seen this before or do they look like they were added later? Thanks for any input.

Nice coat, and a great addition to your collection.  As for the cavalry sabers worn above his sharpshooter badge???  It could very well be that this soldier added this to show that he was proud to have served in the cavalry, and to add a little individualism to his uniform.  We see all sorts of "unauthorized" items added to uniforms.  My father-in-law was in the 16th Cavalry when it was horse cavalry in the early 40's, and I have a photo of him wearing a small horseshoe attached to his sharpshooter badge below the other weapon qualification bars.  I'm sure it looked good to him, but I doubt if it impressed his first sergeant!

Pointedcuffs

Great addition to your collection.

I would say added much later. Cavalry insignia looks like it has Myers hallmark on the back and is post WW1 shirt size.

Thanks for the info! I agree the cavalry insignia was probably added later. It is Meyer marked as you mentioned pointedcuffs.

hard to say if it was done by the veteran or by a collector but I think I’ll leave it on for now.
