I once owned an SA80 bayonet (not the XM9 type). It might have been a good bayonet on the end of a rifle, but felt miserable in the hand. The off set blade would have been problematic for any actual knife tasks IMO. They might as well have made it as an updated socket bayonet, without any pretense of it being a knife.

Slufstuff, yup the SA80 is an oddity.

Since the Type-C XM9 had an M7 style locking pommel and muzzle ring as part of its design I'm surprised Royal Ordnance didn't just engineer their Type-C XM9 as a dedicated conventional style bayonet with the blade on the center axis with the grip. It seemed like there was no sense to having an offset blade and hollow grip since the rifle wouldn't be shooting through the grip like the SA80/L3A1 bayonet. Since the SA80/L3A1 is a cast metal bayonet, maybe it was just more cost effective to modify an already existing mold into a mold with Type-C changes rather than re-engineering a whole new design.  Nevertheless, the SA80 is already an odd bloke but with the added peculiarities of the Type-C mods, I think that's what really makes the Type-C XM9 stand out.

The Royal Ordnance Type-A XM9 however, was designed to be mounted over the flash hider of the M16 platform of rifles; so, in respect to the Royal Ordnance Type-A XM9, I can see still retaining the offset design. 'crayj' has an excellent example of a Type-A XM9 and I can't wait for him to post it.

XM9 fans ... Ron Riede from Bayonet Trader (https://bayonetsonline.com/index.html) just updated me about his Phrobis XM9 bayonet, number A24. After checking the accessory pouch of #A24, Ron made a cool discovery ... Ron found out that his XM9 also had the "ACCESSORY/M-9 PISTOL MAGAZINE POUCH" note residing inside the pouch; something he was unaware of previously. Check out these photos:

New addition to my crop of XM9 trials bayonets; the Ontario XM9 (unofficial) entrant. Ontario didn’t make their submission in time for the Army trials which caused some  heartache with the vendor.

Enjoy!

Here’s a cool bit of XM9 memorabilia, the ultra rare External Wire Cutter Scabbard I just received from Ron Riede/Bayonet Trader with the even more rare pancake pouch, 1 of 15 (check out the note supposedly from Micky Finn) made. I was surprised it sat on Ron’s website for so long; when I started acquiring XM9’s I figured this was a must-have!

Nevertheless, I believe this scabbard was favored by the Army during the XM9 trials; however, it exceeded the specified weight parameters and was not chosen in lieu of the cutter plate design we’re all familiar with.

This is the exact scabbard and note depicted on M9M4.com (credited to pwcosol) and I believe the chain of custody was Micky Finn > pwcosol > Ron Riede > me. Maybe, pwcosol can elaborate and will  have some more backstory to this scabbard???

Hi all,

I came across this topic and I still remember most of the nicknames I see here.

At the time we were all very active on the quarterbore forums.

it is just too bad that that site went down, as there was a lot of information collected

Still remember when we were bidding against each other in all those auctions, then came a chinese guy who was spending  crazy amount of money and was getting all rarest models.

In the meantime, I had kids so I had to store away all my M9 bayonets. I can’t even remember all the models I have…., but I DO remember I have one the the Phrobis  XM9.

Anyway, heard that Bill Porter passed away some time ago.

Is the M9 bayonet still popular?

Greetings

Carlo from Italy

Carlo, I think the popularity of the M9 has diminished a little but the rarer models are still commanding some crazy high prices. The Phrobis XM9's when you can find them, go for several thousands of dollars. And the 1st Generation 'Chevrons' have been going for around $2000-$3000 USD. I think so much of the super rare stuff was scooped up by overseas power collectors in the past that many examples are obscure now. When Bill passed away, a lot of bayonets that haven't been seen in a long while became available. -Drew
