Hello. Trying to find out what period this gear is associated with as I was told this was flight deck head gear on a carrier. Not sure is any of the numbers or letters can reference. Any input or knowledge is greatly appreciated

The codes on the ear cup indicate it came from a Pacific Fleet squadron (P61). I am unable to tell you which squadron because I don’t have a list of every squadron’s code.

The (13A) code indicates the work center within the squadron. In this case work center 13A is the Paraloft where the parachute riggers maintain the flight gear, chutes and etc. This cranial was assigned to a third class petty officer within the Paraloft work center.

Hope this helps

The “8L” indicates the helmet was used by a squadron on a carrier and assigned to a carrier air wing. If I remember correctly I THINK the 8 series numbers were assigned to the S-3 Vikings. I could be wrong though.

Yes, your cranial helmet was assigned to an EA-6B prowler squadron in the Pacific Fleet. Here is a Prowler Plane Captain starting an EA-6B. Notice he has an “8” on his helmet.

Sorry for coming in late in the game, as it were...you have a HGU-24/P or HGU-25/P flight deck helmet.

Please see the attached for "cranium" and "vest" color combinations.

What is a “cranium”??

Never heard that helmet called a “cranium” before, always used the term “cranial helmet” for the flight deck helmets.

I think he meant cranial.  Might have had an auto correct too
