suwanneetrader Posted September 18, 2021 #1 Posted September 18, 2021 I've often wondered and tried to read all I can on these early 15 and 16 star buttons and 5 and 6 pointed stars. Were any 16 star examples made after the Civil War? Also see attached photo of this large brass 2 piece with most of original blackining It is 1 1/8 inch diameter and marked * SCOVILL MF'G CO. * WATERBURY It has 13 five pointed stars. Ref on web says THE FOLLOWING ARE VARIATIONS DATING FROM 1850-1865 SCOVILL MG. CO. / SUPERFINE SCOVILL MG. CO. / WATURBURY CT. SCOVILL MF’G CO. WATURBURY CT. (This button is so marked. but is it really CW era as I have 5 and that seems alot to find at one time if CW? ) Richard
SgtMaddoxUSMC Posted September 19, 2021 #2 Posted September 19, 2021 I've never seen any USMC buttons with 15 or 16 stars! I thought 13 was standard
suwanneetrader Posted September 19, 2021 Author #3 Posted September 19, 2021 There is 16 and 15 stars as well as 6 and 5 points on the stars. Very confusing some $2.00 buttons and some $100.00 and more. The question is which is which 😖 Richard
Brig Posted September 19, 2021 #4 Posted September 19, 2021 Black finished USMC buttons didn't come around until the 1900s with the introduction of service uniforms.
suwanneetrader Posted September 20, 2021 Author #5 Posted September 20, 2021 Well More of "Do not believe most of what you read on the web" The above highlighted 1865 info came from a "Button ladies" web site. Sorry I posted wrong info. Richard
Brig Posted September 20, 2021 #6 Posted September 20, 2021 It's always possible Scovill pulled out an old die before transitioning, regulations were much more loosely adhered to in those days
