Edelweisse Posted September 13, 2021 Share #1 Posted September 13, 2021 Hi Folks: While vacationing in Hawaii….we visited a Hawaiian site on the west shore and while we sat and watched the sun go down….my daughter discovered a rifle cartridge. I noticed that it was a 30.06 and I found “32” and an “F”. When we got back to our rental, I soaked the round in vinegar and cleaned the cartridge and found “FA” for Frankfort Arsenal and “32”….why would that cartridge be there? Ceremony??? WWII event? Salvage Sailor Posted September 13, 2021 Share #2 Posted September 13, 2021 Constant small arms gunnery exercises on the Westside of Oahu in the 1920's - 1930's. The Companies would encamp at Haleiwa, Nanakuli, Waianae, Makaha, etc., and blast away at targets off of the shoreline. Photos from my Pineapple Army collection from various units:

30thguy Posted December 11, 2023 Share #10 Posted December 11, 2023 I was stationed in Hawaii in the 70's . We were camping out on beach and dug a hole for fire pit and dug up the remains of a case of 30-06 ammo in bandoliers and clips Rusty and crumbling ,but thank goodness we didn't build fire on top of it. silverplate Posted December 15, 2023 Share #12 Posted December 15, 2023 Fascinating post. Love the pre-war photos. Never hear much about the military presence in Hawaii prior to Pearl Harbor.
ccyooper Posted December 17, 2023 Share #13 Posted December 17, 2023 One of those cartridge casings could have come out of this old red stripe Denver Ordnance crate shipped the the Naval Depot on Oahu.

RG 67 Posted January 30 Share #15 Posted January 30 My wife's grandfather was in the Navy during and for a short while after WW2. He of course was a child of the depression era, so it pained him greatly to help dump entire pallets of shotgun ammo overboard "somewhere between California and Alaska".
