jmpmstr Posted August 28, 2021 Share #1 Posted August 28, 2021 United States Navy Captain. He was the commander of the dirgible USS Los Angeles on her maiden flight from Germany to Lakehurst N.J. He was later Captain of the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga. He was a graduate of Annapolis in 1900. During WW, Steele commanded a troop transport for which he was awarded the Navy Cross, then the third highest valor award that could be presented to Navy personnel. His Citation reads as follows: The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Captain George W. Steele, Jr., United States Navy, for distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. HENDERSON, engaged in the important, exacting and hazardous duty of transporting and escorting troops and supplies to European ports through waters infested with enemy submarines and mines during World War I.
