Abomb Posted August 4, 2021 Share #1 Posted August 4, 2021 If a B-17 bomber crew was lucky enough to complete their 30+ missions they could return home to the U.S. Yet their enlistments lasted for the duration. Some were enrolled in training programs for new skills . This was the fate of one aerial gunner Staff Sergeant from the 379th bomb group out of Kimbolton, England after completing his tour of duty in June 1944. He was still in a training program when the war ended. Below are photos of materials he used during this post-mission training:
SARGE Posted August 4, 2021 Share #2 Posted August 4, 2021 What a neat set of training material. Did he do his later training overseas or in the US?
Abomb Posted August 6, 2021 Author Share #3 Posted August 6, 2021 This man trained in the U.S. At least in the spring of 1945, he was stationed at the San Antonio Aviation Cadet Center. The manuals have that label and his navigation quizzes use Texas landmarks and airfields. San Marcos and Foster airfields are used for one problem. As an aside, I have items from a B-17 Bombardier who, after completing his missions in mid-1944, bounced around half a dozen locations in the U.S. His first assignment was in Atlantic city for two months. It was where they sent you for "combat fatigue". His last assignment was in Midland, Texas. There, he was training to become a flight school instructor. HIs training was summarily ended in August 1945.
