Some time back I picked up an interesting set of log books. which spanned his USAA , Inter-Island Ltd and then Hawaiian Airlines flying career. This complete flying career set of flight logs originally belonging to a post WW-1 USAA pilot and later #2 hire for Inter-Island Airways Ltd. pilot.

Most notably when he transitioned from the Army Air Corp. to Inter Island Airways Ltd he maintained his USAA flight logs until he ran out of space.

Upon transitioning from the USAA to Inter Island Airways in April of 1930 he tallied up his USAA A/C he flew and flight times. Then marked his career change with a Honolulu newspaper clipping.

As seen in 1930 (on the right) with his first ride.

Some four years after being hired by Inter-Island Airways they were granted an Air Mail route by the USPS. Below are Two FFC from that event & signed by the same two fellows seen above.

Hi All,

Although his Dec. 7, 1941 experience was found to be absent from his flight logs, that flight just missed happening.  As explained in the Hawaiian Airlines periodical magazine HANNA HOU.

That morning the Hawaiian Airlines flight to Port Allen on Kaua‘i was boarding in Honolulu. Captain Gilbert Tefft and First Officer Steve Rosetta were preparing to start the engines when their aircraft was strafed by Japanese fighters, precipitating a hurried evacuation of the passengers and crew to the nearby hangar. Miraculously, none were injured. Looking on in amazement and fear, they witnessed a second attack on the DC-3. This time our aircraft caught fire. Moments later, before the fire could take proper hold, providence intervened and bullets from a third attack ruptured part of the aircraft’s extinguisher system, quenching the flames.

It is my understanding that immediately following Dec. 7, 1941 all of Hawaiian Airlines operations came under the direct control of the USAA'until the War's end.

Cheers, Dave

Hi All,

See Gilbert Tefft's flight logs as related to his post USAA career. Specific to Inter Island Airways maiden USPS contract and as related  to the first flight covers seen above. Along with having flown that same S-38 a/c as seen with Teft and Elliot shown along side that in this same thread.  Note that his flight was to Kauai and same as the 1st flight signed cover. That flight took 2 hours and 21 minutes round trip.  Most notably, Gilbert Tefft's logs are signed by Chief Pilot  Charles "Sam" Elliot who flew to Hilo that same day.
