Kenny80a Posted July 30, 2021 Share #1 Posted July 30, 2021 I picked this special forces beret up this morning. Is there any way to tell how old it is? I don't know if the same rule applies with the cut edge flashing as it does with shoulder patches. It has got a good bit of wear to it with the blue on the flashing faded and corrosion on the captain's bars. All help is appreciated.
doyler Posted July 30, 2021 Share #2 Posted July 30, 2021 the cut edge flash and patches were changed over to merrowed around the same time so the "general" rules apply. THis said many cut edge flahes were worn well past the vietnam era and into the 1980s. The DSA number her is early from what I see as it doesnt have the 2 digit numeral for year or the DSA-100 prefix. your DSA 1-8359 I recall dates this to fiscal year 1965-
Tonomachi Posted July 30, 2021 Share #3 Posted July 30, 2021 I believe it is a 1960s era beret. The DSA (Defense Logistic Agency) stencil was used between 1961 and 1977. Along the inside should be a 1" x 3" rectangular piece of leather with 2 vent grommets. If it is sewn on with a whip stitch this indicates a pre 1970 beret. DSA-1 without a year date like your beret is supposed to indicate 1965 but I'm not 100% sure about this.
