USMC-RECON0321 Posted July 28, 2021 Share #1 Posted July 28, 2021 Hello, This grouping was brought in from the public at the SOS and I was able to make a deal with them. This is a unique grouping, and maybe many would not have interest because of the state side service, but that’s what made it unique to me. This grouping is named and identified to Staff Sergeant Millard H. Schlatter, ASN 37681320. I’ve only done some basic research with the help of a friend of mine (Thanks Doug) and found that SSGT Schlatter was an experienced mechanic when he joined at 34 years of age from Iowa and served from 1943 to 1945 at Fort Riley Kansas with (I believe) the 2nd Training Regiment at the Calvary Replacement Training Center as an Instructor. what really caught my eye of this grouping is the Tanker helmet with the staff Sergeant rank painted on the front, his last name painted on the back and just how the helmet looks like he took it off on his last day of duty and brought it home, still complete. The enlisted uniform is a great early example and luckily found his dog tags and badges inside the pockets of his shirt, The people I bought this grouping from had no idea they were in there. Also included with the grouping is his goggles and an early pair of leather gloves dated 1940. These gloves look like what most people call paratrooper gloves except you will see they have a snap at the cuff where most of research do not. would appreciate any help with research on the veteran or anything interesting about the grouping. Thanks Troy
BILL THE PATCH Posted July 28, 2021 Share #2 Posted July 28, 2021 Really nice, also I always thought it the triangle specialist cuff patches were only AAF. But as we see here the mechanic patch is on the cuff. So army personnel used them. Never saw one on a army uniform. Very uniqueSent from my moto g(7) play using Tapatalk

dmar836 Posted July 28, 2021 Share #4 Posted July 28, 2021 I've never seen the triangles outside of AAF either. Pretty interesting. The gloves aren't really the cut of the paratrooper cavalry gloves and are considerably heavier IMO. They are more akin to the heavy duty issue gloves - often seen issued to WPA and CCC workers. They don't have the Emergency Relief nomenclature found on some but are a different glove. They are cool in their own right. Interesting grouping. Red Devil Posted July 28, 2021 Share #5 Posted July 28, 2021 This is a fantastic group! I have seen sleeve ratings once or twice outside of AAF uniforms, but only the radio one if I remember right. That helmet set is great.

Dave Dave, yes heavy leather gloves and a bit stiff at this point. But definitely a military issue with the QM stamp I would think. Who is WPA and CCC? Civilian Conservation Corps? Yes would like to figure out the sleeve rating patch on this. Was this actually authorized for use outside USAAF or something done anyway? crotalus358 Posted July 28, 2021 Share #8 Posted July 28, 2021 Killer grouping, Troy! The tanker helmet is great - you never see them with markings on them, let alone an ID.
dmar836 Posted July 28, 2021 Share #9 Posted July 28, 2021 Yes, CCC and WPA had military issued items. Many were specially marked based on the program but still came from QM - Philadelphia IIRC.

Yes it’s a show of shows I had several people see the uniform behind the table and it was quite the discussion about that patch. Several said they have examples in their collection not connected to the Army Air Force.

tredhed2 Posted July 28, 2021 Share #18 Posted July 28, 2021 No, purchased from dealer, not direct from vet. I did meet a live one who had one in a frame w/ his other patches and insignia, and he worked in comm....never AAF, WIA Korea w/ 2nd ID later.
