Some of you may have followed this on EBay recently.   This is my first Hawley liner.  Heat stamp is “58C”

Thank you Alec.  I seem to have found the son (Odie L. Knight III) who passed away a few years ago but I've never had much luck with research.

That is one of the tiniest rates I have seen painted on a helmet. Haha.  I like this subtle understated look of this one. An early Navy is right in my wheelhouse (if you look at my post history). Hawley is in great condition mate. Congrats on this addition to your collection!
 

If you are interested you can sign up for ancestry free trial and find out more about this man. The ships he served on. Battles he fought in.  I have researched many of my lids and once you start peeling that onion you never know what you are gonna find.

Here's what I found on Fold3 after a quick search. Looks like his middle name is Lunceford, though the obituary spells it Lunsford.

Hi 

I found the same Knight but that's not consistent with the ID number (801-43-17 in the helmet and 750-64-19 in fold3).

Also, the rate (Seaman 1st class and then Sonar Man not consistent with the pharmacist's rate).

 

I find this helmet very nice with its rate !

Max, good point. I may have the wrong man. I was going with the thinking of, how many Odie L. Knight Jr's can there be?? Well it seems like more than one. His enlistment in late 1944 also would not line up with an early war helmet setup.

Is there a site to search Navy serial numbers like there is for Army?

No, not really.  FOLD3.com can do a search of the muster rolls but results are iffy (I've found).  You can search the muster rolls by name through FOLD3 and Ancestry, but it only searches for ships rolls, not shore-based commands.  As you can see from teh previous answers, the search result have come up with a similar name, but nothing else matches up.

Thank you..I've had moderate luck with researching Army serial numbers but no luck find info on Navy guys.   It's hard to believe that there are at least two O. L. Knight Jr's out there.. Crazy odds of that.
