WW1 Gas Mask - Any way to restore?

Picked up this gas mask a while back.  The mask is basically frozen in place.  Does anyone know a way to restore?   Maybe soak it in a liquid that would loosen or free it up?

Soaking it in anything will not help. The face piece can be reshaped with gentle steaming. Once it cools it will essentially be frozen in place again.

My goal is to open it up and put it on a foam or glass head.

Thank you for the response.

Any other ideas are greatly welcomed.

It is also a good idea to cover the foam head with cotton material to prevent any reaction between the foam and the rubber.
