This most likely has something to do with Fort Monmouth.

It is not too far from the market I frequent.

It came in a blue velvet box.

DAO would be Defense Attaché Office. Look like an award for 25 years of service.

I would have to guess he passed away if it ended up at the flea market.

an excerpt from his obituary:

 

"From 1951-1975, he worked at Fort Monmouth’s Signal School teaching Still and Motion Picture Photography."

Interesting! Glad you found an obituary. I looked on FaG and there were quite a lot of Joseph Schiavones.

Not sure how attaché office fits, but I can’t find another use of DAO.

His Obit doesn't mention any military service so it would be weird if he was assigned to the Defense Attaché Office .

I think it's DAC, not DAO? Department of the Army Civilian...what the non-military employees of the army are classified.
