KevinBeyer Posted July 18, 2021 Share #1 Posted July 18, 2021 Can anyone help me understand the significance between the two sizes and slightly different designs of these two Afghanistan Campaign Medals?
Kadet Posted July 18, 2021 Share #2 Posted July 18, 2021 The first generation of Iraq and Afghanistan campaign medals used an incorrect specification and were too large. This was eventually corrected and they are now the smaller size that is typical for a campaign medal.
m1903 Posted July 18, 2021 Share #3 Posted July 18, 2021 There are a few of the newer campaign medals that have similar variations Campaign_Medal_Change_Article_7_27_2015.pdf
KevinBeyer Posted July 20, 2021 Author Share #4 Posted July 20, 2021 Thanks, Kadet and m1903! It's interesting to me that this kind of specification would go unnoticed prior to production. I would have expected the size difference would have stuck out like a sore thumb to the people who make honors for a living. Are the larger sized medals, harder to come by? Is there any sense of rarity of one versus the other? Thanks again for your responses. I learned something today! Kevin
CNY Militaria Posted July 20, 2021 Share #5 Posted July 20, 2021 Fun fact, as an Afghanistan veteran circa 2011, I was never issued one of these and was told that I’d have to go to the PX to buy one if I really wanted it. It was not until I left the military and requested my medals from the Government that I was given one.
postmanusnac Posted July 20, 2021 Share #6 Posted July 20, 2021 I never knew there was a difference. I’ll have to look at mine.

Someone wasn’t doing their job as it’s just a matter of ordering the medals by National Stock Number and making sure they were issued to the people who deployed. Anyway, I’m glad you finally got it.
