Texengland Posted July 11, 2021 Share #1 Posted July 11, 2021 I saw a website a while back that showed how to adapt these for modern batteries but I can't seem to find it now. I've had this light for years and want to finally get it cleaned up and working. Anybody have any ideas on the modern battery issue and also what a good modern color would be close to the original? I was thinking of some model paint in battleship gray. Sent from my SM-A716U using Tapatalk
Blacksmith Posted July 11, 2021 Share #2 Posted July 11, 2021 Personally, I think it looks fantastic as it is, but to each their own. :)
Texengland Posted July 12, 2021 Author Share #3 Posted July 12, 2021 Its got pretty heavy rust on the bottom and the batteries exploded inside. I figured if Im going to clean it up might as well make it work.
mikie Posted July 12, 2021 Share #4 Posted July 12, 2021 I passed up one of these things at a flea market about 5 years ago. Been wanting to get one ever since. If you do get yours back in shape, please let us see how it goes. Mikie

Regarding getting it functional again, absolutely. I started my work life as a component-level bench tech, so always leap at opportunities to fix stuff like this. This would be a really straight-forward job - even assuming that bloated, leaking, corroded batteries destroyed the wiring and other internals. Even if the switch was cooked - and I doubt it is, that looks to be a standard short-throw lamp toggle switch.
Texengland Posted July 12, 2021 Author Share #6 Posted July 12, 2021 I only had one wire connection that will need some work. The others just need to be cleaned up. Got the batteries out last night after a lot of work lol. This is where I'm at at the moment, on hold for now till I get more time.Sent from my SM-A716U using Tapatalk
Blacksmith Posted July 12, 2021 Share #7 Posted July 12, 2021 AWESOME! Are those 1.5V batteries?
hink441 Posted July 13, 2021 Share #8 Posted July 13, 2021 Nice battle lantern. I have seen them mostly gray colored. I have also seen these red and black. Here are some of mine, the yellow one is a modern battle lantern. None of mine work though.

Charlie Flick Posted July 14, 2021 Share #11 Posted July 14, 2021 I had a gray one that did not work either. Did not have time to fix it and it was outside of my particular collecting interest, so I moved it on. Take a look at this Youtube video about a lantern restoration. [Link error fixed.] This guy does a really nice job on his lantern. Of course, he seems to have every tool and part known to man which makes the job easier. Even so, it is fun to watch a craftsman at work. https://www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&ccid=HX+I/cQd&id=EAC62C3751AD4599639861E5E099E753DDE378E4&thid=OIP.HX-I_cQdDKRuWRqcvA7PKwHaEK&mediaurl=https://i.ytimg.com/vi/1QfObgcVdRE/maxresdefault.jpg&cdnurl=https://th.bing.com/th/id/R.1d7f88fdc41d0ca46e591a9cbc0ecf2b?rik=5Hjj3VPnmeDlYQ&pid=ImgRaw&exph=720&expw=1280&q=battle+lantern+restoration&simid=608048278383040010&form=IRPRST&ck=088B6F980549B6132A077CDFE4C2371B&selectedindex=0&ajaxhist=0&ajaxserp=0&vt=0&sim=11&adlt=demote&shtp=GetUrl&shid=06f6e8ea-e730-4641-8e14-f5a677ae5139&shtk=VVMgTmF2eSBXVzIgU2hpcCBCYXR0bGUgTGFudGVybiBSZXN0b3JhdGlvbiAtIFlvdVR1YmU%3D&shdk=Rm91bmQgb24gQmluZyBmcm9tIHd3dy55b3V0dWJlLmNvbQ%3D%3D&shhk=ExRv89xFiVONa1QkDW2JVy0F6dN6TMyF2FCqZU4%2B6h0%3D&shth=OIP.HX-I_cQdDKRuWRqcvA7PKwHaEK Good luck. I don’t know for certain but these types are considered WW2 period. The different switch types might be for explosive proof operation in toxic atmospheres. This is an old picture of one of mine. I think these types is pre WW2.
