Is this a WWI ammo box of some sort?

I think it could well be WW1+ period, but without Ordnance stamps, weight, lot number, etc., I think it would be for commercial trade.

I'd agree - civilian, but I like the way these boxes are built. Love those finger joints. They are usually reasonably priced so I grab them when I see them.

As he said, without acceptance marks from the US ordnance department, it's safe to say it was civilian sales.
