Wailuna Posted February 6, 2009 Share #1 Posted February 6, 2009 This Y1B-17 (serial number 36-161) was assigned to 96th Bombardment Squadron, 2nd Bombardment Group, Langley Field, Virginia, ca. 1937. The 96th Bombardment Squadron insignia, used here as nose art, was officially approved March 4, 1924. Number 36-161was among the first 13 operational B-17s initially acquired by the Army Air Corps, ushering in the WWII era of the Flying Fortress.
