MattS Posted July 3, 2021 Share #1 Posted July 3, 2021 This was found in a friend’s grandfather’s house while cleaning it out. No one in the family knows anything about it. My first thought was a Rev War pike or trench spear, but I’m open to other opinions. Measures 18” end to end. Definitely old and hand made with a hollow shaft and a cut off wooden pole still in place.
sundance Posted July 4, 2021 Share #2 Posted July 4, 2021 Neat no matter how old it is. Looks like 2 pieces, iron and brass/bronze. How are the 2 parts connected or are they connected?
Blacksmith Posted July 4, 2021 Share #3 Posted July 4, 2021 Hi Matt - what characteristics indicate to you that it’s hand made?

The collar where the brass handle meets the blade looks hammered to me, but I’m no expert.
MattS Posted July 4, 2021 Author Share #5 Posted July 4, 2021 While researching this, I found this article on pikes during the Rev War which states the blades were to be 18” in length. https://allthingsliberty.com/2013/09/bows-and-arrows-pikes-and-spears/
Len S Posted July 6, 2021 Share #6 Posted July 6, 2021 I think it might be from the Philippines. Check out a site on ethnographic weapons. Len

Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines - that part of the world, based on composition and form.
MattS Posted July 6, 2021 Author Share #9 Posted July 6, 2021 Possibly a WW2 bring back?
Blacksmith Posted July 6, 2021 Share #10 Posted July 6, 2021 Could be any number of scenarios, including that one - unfortunately, with no provenance / chain-of-custody, we're left to speculate. Assuming it is from that part of the world, it could also have been a bring-back from the Philippine Insurrection. MattS Posted July 6, 2021 Author Share #11 Posted July 6, 2021 The grandfather was a USN Pacific vet, so it makes sense as a bring back.
gwb123 Posted July 6, 2021 Share #12 Posted July 6, 2021 The pole may have been cut off so the blade could fit into a duffle bag. Just a thought.
