that's the question. This is the earliest M-1 helmet (McCord) I have and as you can see the heat stamp is partially obscured by the rim. The first digit has to be a 2 or a 3 but I'm not shure which one. Anyone want to hazard a guess? The helmet has the earlier characteristics like the more rounded chin strap loops and a cast buckle. It came with an early St. Clair liner with green painted interior. Unfortunately no name or ASN. Feel free to leave a comment.

Hi Rene. Nice helmet!  I vote for " 2" .  But if you want to be sure, just pry the rim off.

Thanks. I was already planning to do that (pliers are at the ready) but then I remembered this section on the USMF where maybe some educated guesses can help me along😉

Lovely! I absolutely love these early 1941 Mccord shells. It is indeed a 27A3. It can be seen on the top curve of a number 2 and 3, they do not look the same.

You popped right in at the fifth earliest Mccord shell I have ever seen. I keep a little image database of Mccord shell numbers. Your shell is within the first 18.000 made M1 shells, not counting a few 100 test shells. So that is pretty nice. Add to that, that of the first 200.000 produced, 30% was discarded after the draw or in the forming process. Makes your shell even better!
