Would this be WWII vintage or newer?

I’m putting together an example of WWII USMS insignia - would this be appropriate or does it only apply to USN  insignia?

Thanks!

I like it and would not hesitate to call it WWII vintage. These badges were often worn by officers of the maritime service who held reserve commissions in the US Navy. I would say that it would absolutely go in your USMS display.

Yes...the "Sea Chicken" as we call it. Few were brave enough to actually wear it on their Navy uniforms. 🤣

But, to answer your question: this is exactly what I'd want in a WW2 vintage example. Very nice!

Who would wear this on a Navy uniform? An officer with a Reserve commission?

Thanks for all the replies!

salvage sailor…. I read that particular thread this morning which prompted me to dig out the bullion.  I got the impression they were worn by USMM but wasn’t sure if the USNavy also wore the,.  Also wanted to make sure of the time frame era.

Great thread with lots of great uniforms!

Here’s the breast badge added to other USMM items.

The cap badge is marked Vanguard, NY and came off off a named hat.  The small devices are both marked Sterling and AE Co., Utica, NY.

Thanks!  Maybe I'm just confused by the terminology.  I'm familiar with the USMM wearing this badge but when Dave referred to wearing it on the Navy uniform it made me think that Navy personnel could also wear the badge.  But the reference on the other thread specifically says the badge is not authorized on the naval uniform.  So is the Merchant Marine uniform considered a "naval uniform"?  If so, then where would Merchant Marines wear the badge?

These were worn not uncommonly on Navy uniforms until their recent change to the new design. Here are a few photos of one of my old department heads who was exceptionally proud of his "sea chicken".
