USMC Large Button Altered when worn or ? why ?

This 1 1/8 inch with 5 point stars Hard rubber or plastic and no backmark, has a white background.  It looks to have been on it for a while.

 

My questions are:  Period of use determination I can not tell difference from WWII thru modern.if black plastic and no mfg. markings.

Sellers refer to 6 point stars and 5 point stars  What is significance? 

 

My main question Is it likely the Marine could have gotten away with this white background?  I don't think so.  What could have been the reason this was done?

Thought I'd bump this.  Has anyone ever had a white background EGA like this?  Richard

It's a WWII enlisted button.  As to why it's painted white, there is no military purpose for that.  My guess someone maybe made a costume later on out of the uniform, or at least the buttons and painted it white.
