Greetings collectors!

I thought it necessary to create a topic solely on showing your M1s with Hawley liners and/or Hawley liners, to give these early helmet liners the credit the own and also for further reference etc.

So, feel free to post!

I'll start right of the bat with this early M1 helmet with a first pattern Hawley liner.

It's a FS FB McCord #170 and comes with the 2nd type of brass chinstrap buckle and also with the early shortened chinstraps.

The Hawley is a nicely used 1st pattern model with rayon suspension, a nice intact leather chinstrap and also with a neatly Major's insignia painted on the front.

The liner belonged at one point to two owners. One was "Kincaid" and the other to a "JDC".

One of them must've been the Major who had painted the insignia on the liner and on the front of the shell (there just remnants of yellow chark visible there).

The second one is my  fixed bail McCord with early short chinstraps on it and a heatstamp of "28XA"!

The shell owns a nice patina and two stress-cracks on the rear.

Inside is a nice Hawley liner, 3rd type bearing the name of the owner outside as well inside, on the headband. I assume that this is even a "General Fabric" piece because there's a faint visible "G" near the dome.

The helmet belonged to "Louis E. Mertz, jr." USMC, who was a photographic reconnaisance member of VMD-254 in the south pacific.

Here's the link to the topic of the helmet:

Looks like it was hanging in a garage and was accidentally sprayed at one point.

Very nice! Looks also like Marine stamps?

Here’s two that are currently in my collection. One is a full set, with the FB shell having a heat stamp of 56A and cast buckle chinstraps. The other is a high quality, seemingly unissued liner.  I don’t have high quality pictures of the lone liner, so I will be using the pictures from the sellers description.

Great! That’s nearly as mint as it can get!
One day I need to get a shell with casted buckles...still on my bucket list.

Thank you, I was hunting it down for a long time! I also forgot to add this one, should be here in the next day or two! Named to a Lt. Col who flew C-46’s, 47’s, 97’s, 119’s and 130’s. Cast buckle straps on this one too, and plenty of research that needs to be done!

Awesome liners and lids guys! And great thread Hannes!

I have not a Hawley in sight :( all high pressure liners in my collection. (one of these days Dave I’ll be knocking on your door for that one if it’s still around).

Do you associate those red stencils with the Marine Corps ?

The Hawley has a sailors name in it. Was wondering why you link the Corps to the red stencils? Is that common to the Marine Corps at the time?

Its possible as it has a sailors name in it and could have been used also by the Marines at some point?

Any info you have would be much appreciated.

I'll share my two. Unfortunately both have seen better days but they still have managed to stay mostly intact.

First up is my 1st pattern General Fibre liner. This one belonged to a Seabee, both the liner and helmet are stenciled on the crown with his initials. The helmet is also stenciled with his first/middle initials and last name under the brim.

The other Hawley I own is one off the USS San Francisco. This one has seen better days but it has somehow managed to hang in there with even the fixed chinstrap intact.

I'm really glad I ended up buying one when they were available. Easily one of my favorite helmets. I just wish I had remembered to take screenshots of the listing before eBay deleted it.

Hm I only thought it possible because of the fond of the stamping. Similar to my USMC M1 but yes, I oversaw the red color of it so I‘m not certain if red was also used by the Marines.

Only the style of the stamps are familiar but the were also used by the navy.
