Thanks. Does the beret look like Vietnam era? Is the helicopter badge consistent with a 50th Signal Bn DI (could he have served in both capacities)?

The 50th Did not serve in Vietnam..

Here is the lineage from the Center of Military History..

The Air Assault Wings are based on the 1974 design and was first approved for wear by the Chief of Staff of the Army in 1978 for those members of the military who successfully completed Air Assault training after 1974,  An earlier design of the Air assault badge was designed and worn in the 1960's by members of the 11th Air Assault (Test ) Division after successful completion of 6 helicopter rappels, 3 from 60 feet and 3 from 120 feet. There were also some other requirements the Soldier's had to meet.

The beret looks to be a standard current issue maroon beret identifying Soldiers assigned to Airborne units and most likely airborne qualified. The beret flash however is for the 50th Signal Battalion and at one time in the 1950's (1957) was designated as the 50th Airborne Signal Battalion but redesignated in 1958 as the 50th Signal Battalion.

Just a hunch here but the person who had the Beret may have been in the Battalion in the 50's when it was Airborne, maybe served in Vietnam (with another unit) and also was Air Assault qualified and this set-up on the beret was post service time and the individual may have worn this at reunions... Just a wild guess as the combination of items on this beret don't otherwise make too much sense..

Perhaps other members would offer what they think this may be...

Best regards

Leigh
