Well here it is the helmet lamp I had posted in the “what’s it worth”. Took a chance on this one, I thought it looked pretty good and with a little encouragement from some fellow members I drove the 1.5 hours this morning to have a closer look.  Seller said he picked it up at a three generation 100+ Year old farm auction just a few miles down the road from him 8 years ago.   I was given the name Olof Andrew Nost from Minnesota but have not looked him up yet.
looks like it has been a lamp since the 1930’s based off the cord on it.  The round in the middle is a 37mm surrounded by 30-06 and .45 rounds. 77CFAAC4-43A3-4078-BFE5-DDCD18E4FDC4.jpeg.c9e185a3fb2f0d5b6da003e0192ac199.jpeg65FFE1FE-098A-4CFE-85EA-1BCFD4B96080.jpeg.3f0e9cade0d9de9681630e6aab43bc19.jpeg3341FC01-354B-47BD-A45E-1DF20B9DD5B1.jpeg.e4d939d8bb2aabd086501f0162b8559d.jpeg2F53771B-232E-40C7-B0CC-BAFE3C8E541B.jpeg.1fc26cae081d0db446a352e933af3e77.jpegFCAE325B-8BDF-427A-8B77-336D67BD780F.jpeg.f651f6320c11e3bac7e2500df6d3f3af.jpeg7246C563-BC49-436A-B8BC-C155F2766034.jpeg.472a5507be534378b757995245fcb7e0.jpeg371375B9-91F6-4FE1-BB6F-5436EA754312.jpeg.ffbdcb40cf4320dd7d759e661a88b153.jpegB5B70441-2298-4CB6-A0C1-97F081BE1EFF.jpeg.206c8531c3683c694baf13e1606a8d13.jpeg353D3551-2E60-4BF5-A3F4-A24930C088E7.jpeg.bb8d0db0293171fd7b7ab5bc0ff7fdc7.jpegA091FB0E-1AAD-4F37-B3D4-CD92654369B7.jpeg.ea658b93a146954a316f1e2a10b37b71.jpegB51F01EF-0BDE-42B0-9421-CD6E935500FF.jpeg.2dafbed5fc6241ae8c6c16fde72e2ac2.jpeg4C35239F-9598-4AE6-94D9-E4F9955F479C.jpeg.94be3305aa240c2e190871fec4fb15ce.jpegE2B75473-AF2C-4B2F-9964-70ED9FD630D0.jpeg.b238acdbde52aacea1fc5d3ead28b143.jpeg4CFEE210-AA94-4169-B16E-5FBACE4AF275.jpeg.cd0b5ee31ee1c447758b86a957b19e28.jpeg437D4E37-C927-435A-B4C2-5AA54CD9F9B1.jpeg.8178565a7e913c155ce3ebc62581d297.jpeg1B37AB3F-BD72-40CD-825D-2652B87D6A44.jpeg.d424e44e7dcbe607eaf3ef6a2064f220.jpegDE39D90F-7E6A-4C1D-9C7C-0C9BC3D6C2C8.jpeg.f620a459d65f26e9d0131a8837cdfba7.jpegA354F545-C8EB-4E85-B250-29F1F2210CB9.jpeg.2e03b6c572fcb307589c7ced8d48856d.jpeg

At first I didn't like the sound of this helmet being turned into a lamp but after seeing the ammo base I think it looks awesome!

Helmet looks good from the pictures and nice to have the original owners name.

Definitely worth the drive.

Congrats,

Ken

Yep, no brainer to buy that one, and easy to get your $$$ back out of it.

Definitely looks better as a lamp, and if it were mine, I would put it back together and stop fiddling with it.

To me, much of the appeal is the dust and grime from being together for so long.  The more you play with it, the more it will look that way.

Yea that is what we call "a one looker" -love it!

But let it be a lamp- it was probably made by Olof himself!

Oh, I'd clean it, but that's my opinion! It is amazing! Definitely leave it as a lamp, as that is way too cool! The wire is from the 50s, most likely. This is certainly one of the coolest things! I'd use a helmet for a lamp like this!

Everyone can rest assured that it was only lightly dusted off because there was no way the wife was letting it in the house with the dust and bugs on it.  Everything was pretty loose when I got it otherwise I would have never tried to mess with it, so I went ahead and got my pictures right away before I tightened everything up.  It will remain a lamp as long as I have it.  Thanks for all the positive feed back I was a little hesitant on this one but am glad I grabbed it before it  went to ebay.

John.

Oh, I wouldn't regret it now! It is amazing! Are you going to plug it in? I'd love to see what it looks like when lit. And don't be afraid to rewire . . . we practically only use old lamps and light fixtures, and rewiring old lamps is very simple and safe and easy! That is one very fun item!

Here is his WWI Draft Registration:

image.png

He was a rural mail carrier in Redwing County in 1901 and 1903. His parents were from Norway.

He died 24 July 1949 in Mille Lacs, Minnesota.

In the 1930 US Census, he answered No to the question of serving in the military.

He had two younger brothers - George and Walter - who may have been the right age and served.

John, what an absolutely incredible piece, looks so much better up close than in the first photos. I too would have bought that with little hesitation. I agree with what most have said, leave it as a lamp and don’t clean it much. I don’t think Nost is your guy. There are no Marines listed with that last name on the Fourth Brigade rosters and I can’t find him in the muster rolls. You will probably never know the Marine who wore it. Perhaps Nost was a friend or he or his brothers picked this up at a flea market in the 1930’s or something, the possibilities are endless. Check the shell closely to make sure there is not a pencilled name in there. In the end, I don’t think id’ing the owner makes much difference, as already stated, that helmet is a one looker and you can rest assured the shell was worn by a brave Marine “over there” and likely during the parades in New York and Washington late summer 1919 when they came home. Congratulations on a spectacular piece, I am purple with envy. Kevin

I think it is a great piece John and personally agree with others who have said (1) leave it in its current configuration (as a lamp) and (2) do not clean it in any way (other than what you have already done [i.e. light dusting with a soft cotton rag])

Too bad about the name. Most likely given to him by a friend or relative.

It still is what it is. A one looker (to me).

Absolutely love this helmet/trench art lamp! Do not clean it, you'd remove all it's awesomeness.

Marchville1918

if he was born in 1975 he might have had a son born in the late 1890s who would be the right age for WW1 service.
