M1910 EQUIPMENT TRIALS CANTEEN COVER

I recently picked up this canteen cover.
I believe this is one of the 300 test covers produced for the 1910 trials.
The front has a unique quilted stitching and the turn buckle fasteners.
The rear hook is inside a roller.
I think "smith" has the hand made canteen to go with this cover.
The report of the 1910 Infantry Equipment board has this type cover pictured.
It's a little worn but still in good shape.

Tim,

If that is real and it looks like it is, that has got to be the rarest find in this century for field gear.

Need to see pics of the front showing the full quilting, not bent in around the cover.

Need to see pics of each side and the bottom.  These were made with 3 pieces of fabric.

I did not expect it to look so clean though.

Again great find.

thanks for posting

US Victory Museum

I agree, that looks like the prototype of the very early 1910 canteen covers.

Here's a photo of a cover with the more conventional stitching, but still retaining the key tabs

prior to their being replaced by the eagle snap buttons.

More pics. Three panel construction. The leather inside covering the washers is long gone.

Thank you for posting the detailed pics.

Typical for the leather to be gone.

major rub area.

Looks like your turnbuckle is a two piece construction 2nd pattern production model.

The 1st pattern production model has flaps like the prototype you picture.

I have a couple of enlargements from images of the 1910 equipment trials of that canteen cover.  I do not doubt it is what you think it is.
