cagedfalcon Posted May 11, 2021 Share #1 Posted May 11, 2021 I picked up a frame with medals double sided tape hold then on. Is it safe to use acetone or goof off to remove the excess adhesive? Thanks Paul Sent from my SM-G998U using Tapatalk

unclegrumpy Posted May 11, 2021 Share #3 Posted May 11, 2021 Setting it out in the sun might help too. Sometimes that softens things enough that you can peal off the tape, and then wipe the remaining adhesive off with a soft rag. If that does not work, then try the hot water. The next would be a little dish soap, and after that windex. Goof Off or acetone could take the finish off.

unclegrumpy Posted May 11, 2021 Share #5 Posted May 11, 2021 Good luck! Go easy, and think about what you are doing. Sometimes the adhesive effects the finish, and there is nothing you can do about that. It is amazing how many nice medals framers have damaged with tape, glue, and their scissors...some seem to love cutting off the broaches.
Steve B. Posted May 11, 2021 Share #6 Posted May 11, 2021 Try isopropyl alcohol first. It is relatively benign but will soften many adhesives. Acetone and Goof-Off are a little more aggressive Still, go carefully and slowly.

The seller looks like he just removed the broaches.Steve, thanks for the isopropyl tip. Sent from my SM-G998U using Tapatalk
kfields Posted May 12, 2021 Share #8 Posted May 12, 2021 I've had luck starting with a hair dryer on the warm setting, not the hottest setting. Kim
cagedfalcon Posted May 12, 2021 Author Share #9 Posted May 12, 2021 Well, I got lucky with most of them. Just using my thumbnail they were starting to dry with age. Will try alcohol next as soap & water seem to just smear it.Thanks to all for the tips Sent from my SM-G998U using Tapatalk
Allan H. Posted May 12, 2021 Share #10 Posted May 12, 2021 Try putting them in the freezer for a while and see if you can get the tape to pop off. Cold will oftentimes make the bonding agent less adhesive. I would try that before introducing chemicals or heat to the piece. Allan

manayunkman Posted May 12, 2021 Share #12 Posted May 12, 2021 I use my thumbnail to remove the tape and rub the residue off with my finger.

LuftStalg1 Posted May 17, 2021 Share #14 Posted May 17, 2021 WD-40 will remove glues and adhesives. Spray a little on a paper towel and a little rub and it will come right off!
