Third Battalion of the Second Regiment landed on Red Beach One from the “head of the bird  to the neck” so to speak on the island of Betio  and was the only beach during the Tarawa landing where there only one battalion was landed due to the intense fire that it was considered ill advised to try and land any other USMC force.

This is a really heart-wrenching award when seeing that pic with his girl in post #3. It's quite the reminder of the pain associated with these collectibles. May his memory live on.

Yes, most of the KIA Tarawa groups or Purple Hearts in my collection are very young men except one who was one of the two warrant officers killed on Tarawa as he was 39. A couple have letters and photos of their girlfriends from home or from New Zealand which is where the 2nd Marine Division went after Guadalcanal and regrouped and trained prior to Tarawa. One large group is to whom might be the youngest Marine killed on Tarawa as he was 16. This group is photographed in Dave´s latest book.

Very impressive group Kurt. It’s nice to see postings on these Tarawa medals. Thanks for honoring the sacrifice of this Marine along with all the Marines lost on Tarawa.
