Kurt Barickman Posted May 6, 2021 Author Share #8 Posted May 6, 2021 Third Battalion of the Second Regiment landed on Red Beach One from the “head of the bird to the neck” so to speak on the island of Betio and was the only beach during the Tarawa landing where there only one battalion was landed due to the intense fire that it was considered ill advised to try and land any other USMC force. Kurt Barickman Posted May 19, 2021 Author Share #12 Posted May 19, 2021 Yes, most of the KIA Tarawa groups or Purple Hearts in my collection are very young men except one who was one of the two warrant officers killed on Tarawa as he was 39. A couple have letters and photos of their girlfriends from home or from New Zealand which is where the 2nd Marine Division went after Guadalcanal and regrouped and trained prior to Tarawa. One large group is to whom might be the youngest Marine killed on Tarawa as he was 16. This group is photographed in Dave´s latest book.
