S/Sgt. Boyd Chesley, Co.C, 172nd Infantry, 43rd Division

I picked up this jacket in a small grouping awhile ago.  It included a picture of him in uniform and his Bronze Star (CIB)  award along with part of his discharge paperwork. The jacket has a fair bit of mothing on the lower left side, but it’s not noticeable.

Boyd enlisted on February 14, 1941 from Lydonville, VT and was discharged April 28, 1945.

Around March 1942 he was promoted to Corporal.

Unless he was overseas differently than the rest of the regiment he would’ve been on the President Coolidge when she hit sea mines and sunk off Espiritu Santo in October 1942.

In December 1942 he is listed as a Corporal and assistant squad leader.

After doing some digging it looks like he was discharged in April 1945 after being hospitalized in September 1944.  There were two diagnosis, one [withheld] and the second malaria.  He was discharged under Section II, AR 615-360, which involves neuro-psychosis (PTSD), that was found to be in the line of duty.

The 43rd Division had an extremely high rate of neuropsychiatric cases.  A major at the Army War College even wrote a paper about it.

Thanks Bill, I agree.  I’m hoping I can get the rest of his discharge paperwork either from VT VA or NARA.

A lot of the army units who fought in the Pacific don’t get a lot of love and I have a soft spot especially for the 43rd.

This certificate may be an example of the Post War blanket award to recipients of the Combat Infantryman Badge.

I’d say that this is exactly that.  I also have the Index to the General Orders for the 43rd and he is not in it.
